Hello Colleen, fellow Canadian!

Is the coating on the outside of the gourd "powdery"? This could be mold or dust which can be washed off.

The other possibility is that the paint is wearing badly because the gourd was not primed for use outdoors.

Do you know what kind of paint was used on the gourd? Acrylics? Oils? Latex? let me know and I'll think of a solution for you.

Thanks for your inquiry.

Gourd painting

It sounds to me like whoever painted the gourd used an indoor varnish to seal the painting. Id lightly sand with a very fine grade of sandpaper then apply outdoor clear varnish let the first coat dry for a day then do the same twice more.
