Painting from a black and white photo

My Mom gave me a photo of my grandfather (who died when I was 5) standing in front of a barn with his back to the camera. She wants me to paint it. I can paint a barn (in color) but have never attempted a black an white photo.
Can you give me some tips for: using the different colors of gray and black and how to highlight this picture?
Thanks for any help you can give me. I want to make her proud that she trusted me with this project.
