I have found that, after cleaning the gourd, a primer or sealer is a good idea to provide tooth. I like to use Rustolem primer grey as it provides both sealer and primer and a relatively good base color to start. I like to base most of my items with buttermilk and then use several glaze layers of paint using a mop brush to blend and smooth the colors. This provides depth to the project.
I do not have a current photo of my prep work. I found this site and am looking into Pebeo Paints.
